Infrastructure and amenities: In San Miguel, you can get all the amenities you expect in the modern world: reliable telephone service, high-speed Internet access, etc. You can get mail delivered and posted reliably and quickly through one of several mail forwarding services. Several international franchises are here, including Domino’s Pizza, Blockbuster Video, and a RE/MAX real estate company. In addition to acclaimed art schools, San Miguel has one of the largest collections of English-language books in Mexico in its public library.
Healthcare: The general hospital in San Miguel, fittingly called General Hospital, is on Reloj Street, just a few blocks northwest of the central plaza. It is served by U.S. emergency physicians who work with the Pan-American Collaborative Emergency Medicine Development Program. The town’s long established seasonal and permanent foreign population also supports a modern, private hospital called "La Fe" and a variety of clinics and doctors representing practically all areas of specialization. Good care is available in San Miguel but for serious health issues, you would go to Querétaro, 40 minutes away.
Nearest major airport: The international airport at Léon is about 90 minutes away and the international airport at Queretaro is about 75 minutes away. Many airlines offer direct flights to Léon from the U.S. Only Continental Airlines services Queretaro. To get from these airports to San Miguel, we recommend you book a shuttle service in advance, through www.viajessanmiguel.com. The cost is about $30 per person. Taxis from the airports can be expensive, at $90 to $100. You can also fly into Mexico City and get a luxury bus directly from the airport to San Miguel. They depart every hour or so and cost about $20. For additional information about getting to San Miguel, e-mail: Mexico@InternationalLiving.com.
Weather and climate: The altitude of San Miguel is approximately 6,000 feet, making for a temperate climate. However, winters can be surprisingly cold, with occasional light frosts. Still, it is warmer than most parts of the U.S. and is rarely grey or overcast. June to September is rainy season. Rains can be heavy, but outside of this time, humidity is low.
