Urge for Going

International Living Postcards– Sunday Edition

Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006

"I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky and it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
And all the trees are shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go

"I get the urge for going, when the meadow grass is turning brown
and summertime is falling down and winter’s closing in…"

– Joni Mitchell, 1966

The leaves are falling from the trees that line the walkways of the Tuileries, and, each day, on my way home from the office, I kick and crunch them beneath my feet, enjoying summer’s last few sunny evenings…and wondering about potential wanderings.

Ironic for one who moves around as much as I do. Frankly, moving around these days can be for the birds. Thanks to the TSA and Homeland Security, getting yourself from one place to another by airplane now involves disrobing in security lines, surrendering your toiletries, and resigning yourself to random rifling through your underwear and other private things by strangers assuring you they’re operating only in your best interest.

It takes work nowadays to make your way from check-in to jet-way with a smile. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if it’s worth it.

But these early fall evenings, kicking the brown leaves through the gardens of the Louvre, it’s not the frustrations of air travel that consume my imagination…but the discoveries 21st-century jetting makes so accessible.

We’ve just completed our 2007 Calendar of Events. Lots of opportunities for new discoveries…

This year we’ll be taking groups of International Living readers to Nicaragua and New Zealand, Panama and Puerto Vallarta, Bangkok and Boquete, Zagreb and Roatan, Buenos Aires and Lisbon, Ireland and Belize… Nearly 40 events in total on the 2007 program, including our first-ever Golf Invitational in Panama, our first-ever Surf ‘n Turf tour in Nicaragua (where the surfing is among the world’s best…as are the property buys), and our first-ever Live and Prosper in Europe event (in Portugal, which you’re going to be hearing a lot more about in months to come, as it hides some of Europe’s best current values).

2007 will also see the return of two 2006 firsts, the Import-Export Seminar (a sell-out this past winter) and the Ultimate Event (premiering next month in Panama City and promising, too, to sell out)…as well as the return to two destinations we think worthy of your attention again: Belize and New Zealand.

Sure, you could travel to these places on your own. If you do, send us a postcard. But I invite you to come with us.

Any trip is about the journey…and the company. And IL company–our staff, our contacts, our colleagues, our resources, our friends, and our readers–is among the best you’ll enjoy.

At our Live Overseas Conference in Puerto Vallarta last March, I met a gentleman, a longtime reader, who told me over cocktails one night that this Mexico event was his sixth with International Living. "Certainly, we appreciate your custom," I responded, "but I have to ask: Six conferences? Can this possibly be worth your while?"

"The conferences are great," the reader assured me, "but I come for the company."

Nowhere else, dear reader, I’d concur, will you find such like-minded, open-minded community.

If, like me, this time of year, you’re feeling restless and beginning to revolt internally at the thought of impending frost…or worse…if you’re dreaming of a new life and a second chance overseas, after years of similar yet until-now unfulfilled daydreams…if you’re looking to stake your claim in a foreign property market, to start your own business in an offshore haven, to build your dream home in an overseas Shangri-la…if you seek partners or supporters, ideas or validation, friends or (yes, even) romance (I met my husband on an International Living tour to Ireland)…travel with us.

We know the world like few others know the world (if we do say so ourselves)…and we considered every corner of it when creating our 2007 Travel Calendar. The destinations we’ve chosen to include constitute the world’s most interesting and most opportunity-filled as I write.

Sure, you could discover them independently. But why go alone…when you can come with us?
