Antigua, Guatemala is for a different kind of expat? Is it for you? Find out in this month’s issue of Latin America Insider.
Dear Latin America Insider Reader,
Guatemala has been captivating travelers for centuries. Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado is said to have stopped between battles to marvel at the beauty of Lake Atitlán. Centuries later, the British writer Aldous Huxley was also overwhelmed by the beauty of this lake, calling it “the most beautiful lake in the world.”
But Lake Atitlán is just a small jewel in Guatemala’s crown. The incredible diversity of this country and culture is captivating. In a matter of days you can walk the cobblestone streets of an ancient colonial capital, barter with Indians who still speak ancient tongues and worship the gods of the ancient Maya, and explore the exotic web of life that is the tropical rainforest.
But is Guatemala safe for the expat? This month in Latin America Insider, we’ll tell you more about this country that is struggling to distance itself from its dark past. We’ll take you to Antigua, on to Lake Atitlán and from there to a Pacific Coast beach project. You’ll read the stories of expats who live in Guatemala, and learn what they have to say about safety and security issues.
It is a different type of expat and traveler that is attracted to Guatemala, no doubt. Who? And why? You’ll find out in this month’s issue. Many find Guatemala, which has the largest Maya population of any country, to be a “spiritual journey.” This month, we also explore La Ruta Maya – and tell you about the best places in Central America to explore the legacy of this enigmatic culture.
