Dear Latin America Insider Reader,

Just when you thought the days of $15,000 beachfront lots and $45,000 beachfront condos were long gone, we’ve got news for you. We know where you can find them.

In this month’s edition of Latin America Insider, we take you to Brazil – known for its exotic culture, beautiful beaches, warm ocean waters, samba, sizzling nightlife, and fantastic weather. And now for its spanking real estate buys.

Long a popular destination for European expats, vacationers, and second-home owners, Brazil is an almost unknown commodity to North Americans. We think that may change as word gets out about what Brazil has to offer and how little it costs.

Of course, if you’d bought here five years ago you would have seen even lower prices. Lee Harrison, our Roving Latin America Editor, says, “I last looked at Brazilian real estate in 2002, during the crisis in Argentina. At almost four reals to the dollar, properties were selling at bargain prices, and just about everything was unbelievably inexpensive for the dollar-holder.

“Today, a dollar only gets you 2.1 reals. An incredible performance for the currency, but unfortunately, prices—while still cheap by most standards—are almost double what they were four years ago. But on the positive side—if this trend continues—your property in Brazil will have a good upside potential owing to the currency fluctuation.”

If there is a drawback to living or investing in Brazil, it may be the language barrier. If you don’t know at least a bit of Portuguese, you’ll need to learn. And if you think that knowing Spanish will get you somewhere, think again. But never fear, intrepid traveler: in this month’s issue, we tell you where to go to jumpstart your Portuguese lessons.

Sit back and enjoy this month’s issue of Latin America Insider…when you’re finished, I suspect you’ll be planning a trip to the southern hemisphere. (Scroll down to see your Latin America Insider user name and password.)
