Outdoor cafes with elegant ambience add to the sultry nightlife in Colombia…

Dear Latin America Insider Reader,

Danger, Will Robinson. Think of Colombia and you probably think of drug lords, kidnappings, and ruthless violence, right? But if Colombia deserves this reputation, why is it being written up in the pages of the New York Times and USA Today as a “must-see” tourist destination? We sent Lee Harrison there to find out.

“When I asked about kidnappings, people would cite some foreigner they once knew who wasn’t kidnapped—hardly confidence-inspiring,” writes Lee. Still, he says, it didn’t happen to him…and he believes that if you don’t go where the drug wars are being fought, you have little risk of being victimized in this country he describes as
“the first place I’ve visited that is actually less costly than Ecuador.”

As long as we’re telling you about the worst of Colombia, we might as well tell you what’s wrong with the rest of Latin America. In three special reports this month, we tell you how countries in Latin America and the Caribbean stack up in key business and economics categories. We tell you which have the best (and worst) outlook for economic growth…and which are making giant strides in the gender race.

The worst thing that happened to Lee in Colombia? He was chased by scantily clad women on the beach in Laguito. Read this month’s issue for the full report…

By the way, if you live in Latin America, we’d like to hear from you. For an upcoming article, we’d like to know where you live and why…please send a note to LatinAmerica@InternationalLiving.com.

Thanks for reading…enjoy this month’s issue of Latin America Insider.
