Ecuador Secret #1: The $300 Apartment With Stunning Views

It’s easy to try a new life in Ecuador on for size. Furnished apartments…with phone, Internet, utilities, cable, all included in the price…are readily available for $200 to $400 a month.

In fact, our home here in Cuenca is a good example. We pay just $300 for a small rooftop apartment with views in every direction across this stunning colonial city. We have a wonderful deck overlooking the iconic blue tiled domes of the Cathedral. A half block from the city’s heart we are in the center of every festival this renowned "City of Festivals" celebrates.

Mornings are always on the terrace with fresh ground Ecuadorian coffee from the stand up the street, complimented by the most delicious and varied fruits you can imagine from the colorful fruit Mercado. With the picturesque flower market just around the corner and spectacular long stem roses 25 for $4, everyday is Valentine’s Day.

If you want to splurge, you could do what friends of ours did.

They moved here to spend more time with their two young kids. They rented an enormous, wonderfully appointed place with huge bay windows overlooking the parks and pathways of the Rio Tomebamba. Their home, which could easily be featured in Home and Garden Magazine, rents for $700. What my son pays for his studio back in Boulder, Colorado will rent you one of the best places in Cuenca for months.

Most furnished options are available by the week or month with no long-term lease expected. We found ours by knowing a little Spanish and searching the Internet. Checking with reputable local real estate agents and letting them help you is an easier way to find the place that will work best for you, especially if language is an issue.

A great adventure of living internationally is the search for the perfect place. Renting allows you to test drive your international life to make sure it fits your idea of what the perfect place should be.

One of the great benefits of the Ultimate Ecuador Kit is the three hours of audio recordings from the recent Ultimate Event in Quito. You’ll hear from some of IL’s most experienced Ecuador contacts and experts telling their personal stories about finding and living the good life in Ecuador.
