The sound of the rolling surf lulls you to sleep at night, and the sparkling sun glistening off the water awakens you in the morning…
Who hasn’t dreamed of living at the beach? Watching the sun rise or set over turquoise waters…taking long barefoot walks in the sand…and dining on a steady diet of fresh catch-of-the-day seafood.
If beach life is what you’re after, and affordability is the key to making it happen, check out these great-value beach locales, where you can save money and gain an enviably relaxed lifestyle.
1. Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Puerto Escondido is one of my favorite Mexican beach towns on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca. It’s a gorgeous, small surfing town that attracts young, athletic sorts, as well as the backpacker crowd. There is also a growing retiree population. Seafood and pizza restaurants line the beach in the center of town, along with some cool boutique shops, most selling beachwear and surf gear.
Prices run the gamut, but this is one of the best places in Mexico to buy a beach home or condo in a happening town at an affordable price. If you don’t need to be right on the ocean but want an ocean view, you can find an attractive one-bedroom condo with a sizeable terrace and a sparkling ocean view from $69,000.
A two-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse condo in the best located and most elegant oceanfront complex in town is currently selling for $240,000.
And if a new beach mansion that accommodates the entire family is what you have in mind, you’ll find that, too. A luxurious four-bedroom, three-bathroom oceanfront home with all the bells and whistles is priced at $480,000.
2. The Ecuador Coast
Some of the lowest prices I’ve seen for beachfront real estate in Latin America are along Ecuador’s Ruta del Sol (route of the sun), between Salinas and Manta. Right on the beach near the popular surf town of Montanitas, a three-bedroom, four-bathroom condo with a swimming pool is currently listed at $119,000…and it’s recently had a $28,000 face lift. There’s also a 2,500-square-foot beachfront lot selling for $35,000.

Don’t forget, for the next 5 days, you can try a subscription to the IL Magazine for just one dollar. My husband, International Living publisher Dan Prescher, had a tough time convincing IL’s marketing director, Jackie Flynn, to go along with this (“you want me to charge readers PRACTICALLY NOTHING?” was her first–and lasting–reaction), and to be honest, I don’t think she’ll do it again…so, if you want to try International Living Magazine for $1…get instant access to my full “top six places to buy on the beach” article…and instant access to the 60 other ideas for travel and retirement…real estate and investment…we published in the April issue–this is your only chance.
