Escape Plan #4: Go…and Stay Connected Around the World

For nearly three decades now we’ve been showing readers the best places to retire overseas to find a richer life that costs you less. This week, with our Ultimate Escape Plan series, we’re highlighting some of the greatest benefits of living in these good-value destinations. Today IL’s Publisher, Dan Prescher, talks about how our interconnected world makes it easier than ever for you to live comfortably on foreign shores…

Escape Plan #4: Go…and Stay Connected Around the World

Back in college, classmates from New York would learn that I was from Nebraska, and sooner or later one of them would ask, “Do you have Indians out there?”

I understood their curiosity. None of my classmates had ever been to Nebraska. They figured I lived in a little sod house out on the prairie and kept a loaded shotgun next to the door. When I told them I lived in a major metropolitan area complete with electricity and indoor plumbing, they seemed almost disappointed.

That’s why I understand when we feature an exotic retirement or second-home location and readers ask, “Do they have Internet there?”

Our answer is almost invariably: Yes. In the eight years I’ve lived abroad, I’ve never been without Internet service.

Let me quickly qualify that by saying that the quality and dependability of the service has varied wildly. There is, for example, a huge difference between the high-speed cable service we had in our office in Quito, Ecuador and the slow and unreliable satellite uplink service available at a boutique beach hotel on Mexico’s Costa Maya, where we stayed for a time (it only worked when the generators were running, and even then, only slowly).

But we’ve always found Internet access of some kind or quality around–even if it was in a little Internet café a mile down the road. It isn’t always instant. And it isn’t always convenient. But it is always available, somewhere.

Sure, you can go out and find places where you won’t have Internet access. But they tend to be locales where we wouldn’t ourselves care to live or work, and so we seldom recommend them to you.

But if you’re in the market for a place that offers electricity and indoor plumbing, you can be fairly confident you’ll have Internet access as well. This is excellent news if you want to live full- or part-time abroad. It not only means that you can easily stay connected with family and friends back home. But it also means that you can make money.

In our years overseas, my wife Suzan and I have met authors, technical writers, bloggers, web masters, day traders, editors, copywriters, EBay auctioneers, wholesalers, resellers… all making smart use of their Internet access and doing business happily from far flung corners of the globe.

You can, too. In fact, we’ve included a special section on making money overseas in our brand new Overseas Retirement Kit, which is hot off the presses. In it you’ll find out about 8 effective ways to collect an income from anyplace in the world.

And right now, as part of our Ultimate Escape Plan offer, that kit is not only on sale, but it comes with all sorts of goodies, free. There’s no better resource out there for helping you to find the place that’s right for you… and to actually get yourself there.

Stay happy and healthy,
