Could U.S. companies start recruiting employees with the promise of work in Mexico?
Consider this: almost 20,000 U.S.-backed companies have facilities or offices in Mexico. More than 1 million Americans already live in Mexico full-or part-time. The cost of living, and especially of health care, in Mexico is a fraction of that in the U.S. And unemployment in the U.S. is rising past 10 percent.
Put is all together, and you may soon be waving to Mexicans coming north to look for work while you’re heading south to do the same thing.
Not only is health care cheaper in Mexico…the costs for utilities are lower thanks to warmer weather. The cost for child care and domestic help is also a fraction of that in the U.S. Taxes are lower, real estate is cheaper…by almost any measure, Mexico is a more cost-effective work environment than the U.S.
And for people out of work in the U.S. or trying to get by on low-wage jobs in the face of rising taxes, utility, and health care costs, work in Mexico is fast becoming a viable option.
There are paperwork, visa, and tax considerations involved for Americans working in Mexico. However, there are also significant savings, including a possible foreign-earned income tax exemption that can legally knock up to $91, 400 off the top of taxable income each year.
