Interested in an import-export business? Ever thought about treasure hunting? Here at International Living, we know a bunch of people who travel the globe and make a very good living as treasure-hunters. Although they’re not really Indiana Jones-type characters, they lead the kind of lives guaranteed to make the folks back home green with envy.
Reece Guth didn’t set out to be a treasure-hunter—he was only seeking some Nicaraguan winter sunshine. But a trip into the backcountry changed his life. The village of San Juan de Oriente lies between two sleeping volcanoes. Reece, who comes from Maryland, found it to be like entering another world. “Cobblestone streets and dirt paths lined with pastel-colored adobe houses…walking around the town felt like stepping through an unseen door into the past.”
That past yielded some unexpected gems. San Juan de Oriente is a village of potters—and has been since pre-Columbian times. Painstakingly making one delicate piece at a time, artisans still use centuries-old designs and techniques.
With vases starting at $1.50, Reece couldn’t help but buy. You’d buy too: similar artisan-made Nicaraguan vases sell for at least $35 in the U.S. So successful were Reece’s initial forays into Nicaragua that he gave up the day job. Now he’s in the Import-Export business full-time.
