The cool, green valleys around Cotacachi village seem a world away from the bustling streets of Quito, Ecuador. This little mountain town is the perfect place to reflect on the lessons learned and insights gained from our largest… and I believe most valuable… conference to date.
The Ultimate Event 2010 shattered records… we’ve never held such a large and well-attended event in the 30 years of International Living’s history. For four overwhelming days in the rarified air of Ecuador’s capital city, more than 370 people learned what amounts to a new way of life.
They were all there for very good reasons. They came from places where a lifetime of savings and investments can evaporate overnight…where the cost of medical care can actually ruin health…where taxes flow endlessly from their pockets into a black hole of government programs from which almost no light or benefit escapes back into the real world of their individual lives.

I’ve hosted dozens of these conferences before, all around the world, and as I look back on this one from the terrace of my little condo perched up in the clear air of the Andes Mountains, I have to shake my head in amazement.
This one really drove it home for me.
Why anyone would sit and willingly suffer high taxes, bad weather, intrusive government, and a grindingly high cost of living is beyond me. Not when year-around sunshine, fresh air, personal freedom, and a healthy, relaxed, worry-free lifestyle can be had in dozens of places around the world for what amounts to pennies on the dollar.
I’ve been living and working abroad for 10 years now, and the advantages of an international lifestyle are obvious to me. You might even call me jaded… at times I find myself taking the incredible life I’ve found outside the U.S. for granted.
But there was no way I could take it for granted as I hosted IL’s Ultimate Event last week and saw the lights go on in those 370 pairs of eyes. There is a better way. A healthier way. A more profitable way. A safer way. A more affordable way.
And with the advice and methods presented by the experts and speakers at the Ultimate Event 2010, it was a way of life that each one of those folks in the audience suddenly realized they could have for themselves.
As one attendee said to me during a networking break during the conference, “It’s like someone suddenly turned on a light. There’s a whole world out here that they never told me about back home. It’s almost like they didn’t want me to know… but I can have the life I always wanted and I don’t have to be rich to get it. I’m finally free.”
