IL’s Panama Editor, Jessica Ramesch brings you on a video tour of a “new city” arising outside Panama City. Across the Bridge of the Americas, Panama Pacifico is formerly Howard Air Force Base, and is being transformed into a Special Economic Zone and residential community. The project is one of the world’s biggest mixed-use developments, and new state-of-the-art housing will soon be coming online.
This is no small undertaking. The government of Panama will work with London & Regional Panama Development Corporation for the next 40 years to create what they call a “dynamic business center and residential Mecca set in a lush tropical environment” that includes:
* 1,400 hectares, with nearly half of the land to remain in its natural state or to be devoted to new parks and open space
* 1 million square meters of commercial space
* 20,000 homes
* 40,000 new jobs
* Retail centers and hotels
* Schools and places of worship
* Parks, recreational amenities, and a championship golf course
