Day 1 in Mexico—Myth-Busting, What You Need To Know

Tulum beach

In Mexico, the sky is blue, the sun is shining, children are playing in the parks, and their parents are smiling. Life is as it’s always been…slow and happy and safe.

Yes, safe. You read that right.

Last night, a stone’s throw from the beach under a luminous crescent moon…windows flung open, conversation and cervezas flowing, my husband Dan and I shared dinner with friends old and new.

To a romantic Spanish serenade, we discussed the ways of the world, shook our heads in disbelief at most of it, and decided that we are the lucky ones. Lucky to be in this magical place sharing food and fellowship beside the sea and beneath the stars.

Despite what the news media north of the border might lead you to believe, there aren’t banditos lurking around every curve in the road. There aren’t roadblocks or cops with their hands out. Yes, there have been isolated problematic incidents…mostly near the border…but we’re thousands of miles from that here in the Yucatan. This is truly a different world from borderland…as is most of this vast, welcoming country of Mexico.

I’m Suzan Haskins and I’m your Conference Insider, reporting to you this week from International Living’s Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar two hours south of Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, just a few miles north of Tulum.

I want you to hear about all the wonder and enjoyment Mexico has to offer, and I want you to hear about it from the people who live and work here. Straight from the heart…from those truly in the know.

Just a Few Hours From Home

Glynna Prentice gets a kick out of living in Mexico. “For most people I live in a vacation destination—but to me it’s everyday life. A very good everyday life,” she said.

Glynna started the day saying that when she was first looking to move overseas, of all the places she researched, Mexico made the most sense. “It’s close to family and friends in the States, and as a single woman moving with a dog, it’s the perfect place to try out expat life.”

You can fly here in just a couple of hours from most anywhere in the U.S. And—like the U.S.—Mexico has a huge number of airports, most of them serviced easily and frequently by airlines traveling from the U.S., Canada, Europe and elsewhere in Latin America.

“And…you can easily drive to Mexico,” said Glynna. “After four years living in Mexico I still get a kick out of saying that I drove here.”

Driving around Mexico is easy too. Glynna made the six-hour drive to the conference here in Tulum from her home in Campeche. And Dan and I drove three-and-a-half hours from our home in Merida.

“Mexico is a place with First-World amenities,” Glynna explained. “If you want it, you can get that big honkin’ washer-dryer combo—you don’t have to get the European kind that only fits two pairs of jeans.”

Plus Mexico offers a six-month tourist visa. “Lots of expats never bother with official residency documents. They just stay six months and then make a border run to renew their visas.”

Mexico’s been a long-time favorite for Americans and Canadians—so you’ll find numerous expat enclaves with lots of English speakers and English-speaking activities. Glynna says to think of Mexico as “Texas South.”

“The romance of old Mexico is alluring,” she said. “There’s a tremendous history here. In fact, Mexico ranks right up there with Europe in the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. And the city and state governments put a lot of money into free cultural events—dance, theater, music. There is much to love about Mexico.”

And when she (and the other speakers) shared their monthly budgets and expenses, you can bet everyone was paying attention. It’s odd…just a few hours from the U.S. and costs are one-third to one-fourth what they are north of the border.

Putting a Cap On the Ol’ Budget Buster: Health Care

Glynna and other speakers (me included) shared details about the cost of living in Mexico. $5 lunches…for two…annual property taxes of $100…20-cent bus rides…$20 for a housekeeper…on and on…

“But in the scheme of your daily living costs, that’s all chump change,” Glynna said. “We all know that the budget buster for most people back in the U.S. is health care. Make no mistake…health care is excellent in Mexico—and it costs 40%-70% less than it does back home.”

We spent time today discussing Mexico’s excellent hospital chains and many large state-of-the-art hospitals, where you will certainly find English-speaking specialists—many of them trained in the U.S. or Europe.

Plus, it was pointed out, Mexico offers a generous retiree benefits program. It’s not well publicized, but it rivals programs offered by other countries. To qualify, all you need is to be 62 years or older and have a Mexican residency visa—very easy to get, by the way. (In fact, of all the countries International Living writes about, Mexico is the easiest country in which to obtain residency.)

Foreigners CAN Legally Own Property in Mexico

Before we go further, I’d like to set the record straight. You can legally own property in Mexico. Glynna does. Dan and I do. All the expat speakers on the schedule this week do. And we all own it legally…no one can take it from us.

There are several legal ways to hold ownership to your Mexican property, in fact — just choose the way that makes the most sense for you. Simple. When you listen to Glynna and the other speakers explain it, it all makes simple perfect sense.

Ronan McMahon, International Living’s real estate guru and the editor of Real Estate Trend Alert, explained why…even if you’re not interested in living in Mexico…you might want to buy real estate here. Tulum will be the next hot destination along Mexico’s trendy Caribbean Coast, he predicts. And if you’re looking to get in on the ground floor (a new international airport is in the works here) this is the place and now is the time.

If you’re interested in learning more about Mexico’s next “it” destination, you need to hear what Ronan has to say.

At this conference are attorneys, financial experts, real estate experts and more. They’re here to discuss the details, deals, trends, laws and opportunities that you want to hear about.

Even I got in on the action, happily discussing one of my favorite Mexico locations…the Yucatan. It was my pleasure to explain why my husband and I chose to live in Merida and how we came to make that decision. (I also talked about how to find the perfect Mexican paradise for you.)

Everyone has their own idea of how and where they want to live, of course. Today we heard about the best of the Caribbean and about some of Mexico’s extraordinary colonial cities—one in particular that you’ve probably never heard of. But you should…it’s a lovely mountain city, rich in history and heritage, yet few expats live there. And it’s very affordable.

Your No-Risk Way to Learn What We’ve Learned This Week

Dan Prescher. Glynna Prentice. Ronan McMahon. Margaret Summerfield of Pathfinder Real Estate, local developers of Si’an Ka’an and Tao Resort Condo projects, and more…

Like Greg Adams of Sovereign International Asset Management. Always a popular speaker at International Living events, today Greg offered up nine reasons we all should be investing outside the U.S.  If we want to increase…and more importantly, protect…our nest eggs, that is.

The biggest reason to diversify outside the U.S. Greg says, is to hedge against a falling dollar. We all know that’s been front and center in the news these days.

Just today, Greg said, the Canadian dollar reached parity with the U.S. dollar.

“It’s funny,” Greg said, “but living in South Florida as a kid there were a lot of Canadian snowbirds who would winter there. Sometimes I’d go into a store and come out with change that included Canadian coins…and I’d feel like I’d gotten ripped off. Today, the situation is reversed. The Canadian who gets U.S. coins feels like they’re on the short end of the stick.”

Greg explained some of the strategies we should be exploring right now…no matter how much (or importantly, how little) money we have stashed away.

There’s so much more I’d like to share with you. Like this…

A Small Un-Touristy Mexican Caribbean Island That You Probably Have Never Heard Of…

By the way, today Glynna told us about her favorite Mexican Caribbean destinations, including a couple that most of the seminar attendees had never heard of. One is a small island that no one really knows about. Very few tourists go there, beyond Mexicans who are “in-the-know” and a few intrepid backpacker types.

(Allow me to gloat, please…because I’ve been there and I agree with Glynna: ONCE word gets out about this little island, watch out. Hint: it’s like Belize’s Ambergris Caye was 25 years ago…one tiny town on a good-sized island that revolves around fishing and the sea. The preferred mode of transportation is a golf cart—and no, while it is fairly close to Cancun it is not Cozumel or Isla Mujeres.)

And another of Glynn’s Caribbean secrets? It’s a huge body of gorgeous turquoise-hued water lined with palm trees…but it’s not the Caribbean. A small group of pioneering expats have settled here…many of them are laid-back and creative types…artists, musicians, yoga practitioners. It’s another of our favorite Mexican destinations that nobody really knows about.

Intrigued? There’s a way you can get every bit of the important information from the Live and Invest in Mexico Seminar.
