In this video, IL editor Dan Prescher is in the Old City section of Cartagena, Colombia, which is steeped in history. Las Bovedas, originally built as a storehouse, also found use as a prison. Today it has been converted into a market where shops occupy the former cells.
In the old days, Cartagena was a hub of slave trade in the Americas. Outside Cartagena is San Basilio de Palenque, a semi-autonomous region, where the descendants of escaped slaves settled. They’ve kept many of their African and Indian customs and can be seen throughout the Old City selling traditional candy and handcrafts.
