Find out how we can help you fast track your plans of moving to…or investing in…Panama
Is Panama the center of the universe?
According to International Living editor Jessica Ramesch…who’s much like Panama herself (a lot of excitement in a small package)…it absolutely is.
Panama has it all, Jessica says. Just a look around the capital city confirms that. You want it, you can get it in Panama City. In fact, this is a place to get even more than you ask for.
I can attest to that (as can nearly 400 International Living readers in the city’s shiny-new Hotel Riu right now). I’ve been visiting Panama for over a decade now. And every year the city amps up its “wow” quotient…more cosmopolitan, more manageable, more beautiful, more impressive…a city that’s left the rest of Latin America behind in its climb to First-World status symbol of shiny, glittering growth and economic prosperity. If only the rest of the world were so lucky.
How has Panama done it? How has this city–and the entire country, in fact–so quickly become such a shining star? Location at the center of the world is just part of it.
Take a look at the numbers, Jessica says. Panama tops all regional and global indexes. Panama is without peer when it comes to first-rate infrastructure (like roads and Internet), its status as a world-class banking center, the sheer number of top-brand hotels (like the Riu) being built…
In socio-economic studies, Panama consistently ranks as being home to the world’s happiest people…
And as for political stability and safety, I dare you to find a country in the Americas that even comes close…
Perhaps Panama really is the bonafide center of the universe, as Jessica claims.
I’m Suzan Haskins, reporting from International Living’s 2011 Live & Invest in Panama Seminar. I figure this is the 10th International Living conference I’ve attended in Panama. And it’s the best yet, with great speakers and pointed, in-depth information about how to best benefit from all this country has to offer. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that Panama City itself is practically trembling with potential.
So what’s the inside scoop from this year’s conference? Today, Panama attorney and legal expert Rainelda Mata-Kelly gave us some valuable insight to what’s going on here:
Panama does one thing better than any other country in the world.
No, it’s not the Canal or the banking center or the stable government…although this country excels at those.
Plain and simple: Panama gives people what they want and need. Nowhere is that fact better illustrated than in the country’s renowned Pensionado (retirement) Program.
Panama’s Pensionado Program is the most generous and appealing program of special benefits you’ll find anywhere in the world today.
You may already know something about it–International Living was among the first to report about the benefits over a decade ago now…and we’ve told you about it many times over the years.
One of the best benefits is that you needn’t be of “official” retirement age to qualify. And once you do qualify, you can import your household goods and vehicles duty-free and be eligible for a host of discounts…from 10% to 50% off everything from doctor’s visits and prescription medications to restaurants, travel, and much more – including 50% off closing costs for home loans.
But here’s what you may not know:
Panama’s immigration legal framework was recently changed to be even more accommodating to foreigners who wish to move here.
As attorney Rainelda Mata-Kelly explained, “The current government is interested in making the immigration law more accessible. The president wants to encourage retirees and medium- to high-net-worth individuals to come and live in Panama.”
So what new incentives and changes to immigrations rules is the government offering and what documents do you need to begin the path to residency in Panama?
Rainelda pointedly ran down the list… and she named the one official certification that every document needs to be accepted in Panama. As the man sitting next to me in the audience said, “I wish I’d known this when I was applying for residency.”
This information, he said, can save you lots of headaches (and mucho dinero) if you’re thinking of moving to Panama.
Over the next few days, I’ll try to bring you as much of the insider information as I can from this conference. But there is so much going on here that to be honest, I can only bring you a handful of highlights.
I’m here with nearly 400 of your fellow International Living readers in one of the most beautiful and exciting cities and countries on the planet. And it’s a whole lot of fun to see their eyes light up when they discover how easy it can be to make this country their new home.
Here’s just some of what we learned today:
Former Congressman (and Sovereign Society founding editor) Bob Bauman made us all feel better about moving from our home countries as he discussed the “Five Flags of Freedom” and offered strategies for protecting your wealth and personal well-being. Remember this, he said: Panama is a very good place to protect your assets with an offshore trust.
This being the “season of dread,” the topic of taxes was top of mind today. So it was mighty handy that CPA and international tax expert Nick Hodges was on hand to address that not-always-pleasant topic.
(Rainelda Mata-Kelly discussed Panama tax considerations, of course. Basically, she said, “Don’t worry…unless you are making an income in Panama–and bank interest doesn’t count–you won’t owe income taxes in Panama.” What about property taxes? There are legal ways to reduce the amount you pay, Rainelda said, and in fact, there is one exemption that allows you to pay no property tax at all.)
Nick Hodges was just one of the several new speakers at this year’s event. I’ll introduce you to more over the next few days. They’re bringing a fresh perspective to this program.
The one thing I think everyone took away from Nick’s presentation today, though, is this: A move overseas to a country like Panama can vastly reduce your tax liability. But you must understand the laws and know what you’re doing to really take advantage of that. File your tax return improperly and you could lose everything. Nick offered up his tips for covering the bases. Importantly, he explained how to protect our IRAs from creditors and lawsuits.
This is must-know information. And there’s so much more I want to share with you…
Your No-Risk Way to Get the Secrets We’ve Learned This Week
But there’s far too much for me to include in an e-mail. (I’ll share some more insights and highlights tomorrow and the next day, too. But there’s no way I can do anything but scratch the surface.)
Still… just because you couldn’t be here with us, doesn’t mean you have to be left out.
There’s a way that you can get every one of the solutions, secrets, good-value ideas, money-making techniques, wealth-protection details, retirement recommendations, real estate advice and contacts, and everything else our attendees are gathering here live at the Live and Invest in Panama Seminar.
The Next-Best thing to Being Here
You can have all of it… and for a fraction of what the folks here in person spent to be in this room with us in Panama…
Today, for instance, we didn’t just learn about all things Panama. We walked away with valuable strategies that could protect our interests no matter where in the world you opt to live or do business.
For instance, Peter Laub–from one of Europe’s most forward-thinking banks (and one with what may be the most secure balance sheet)–explained what to do about “dollar angst.” If you’ve got it, you’ll want to hear what Peter has to say. This one discussion could save your investment portfolio.
Looking for an interesting and potentially very lucrative investment idea? A presenter named Paul Groepler had the room on the edge of their seats with one “spirited” idea. (By the way, Paul and his team have an impressive track record. You’ll want to hear this.)
But of course, the focus was on Panama. Jessica Ramesch shared her favorite locations in the city–those places she believes offer the most potential for expat living.
Where is the area with the most shops, health clubs, etc.? Which part of the city is the “garden area?” Where are the colonial district’s best neighborhoods? Where is the café-society area of the town where people enjoy walking about at night and stopping for a drink or bite to eat? Jessica told us all about Panama City’s best-value neighborhoods…
Real estate expert Margaret Summerfield shared the ins and outs of city’s real estate market and explained why you might want to look at Chiriqui province, where the perfect-climate towns of Boquete and Volcan are located (and where you’ll find first-rate expat amenities). Interested in undiscovered beach locales where prices are lower and you can be a true pioneer? Margaret told us where to look.
And of course, Rainelda Mata-Kelly gave us an in-depth discussion of visa options. Which visas are best if you want legal residency in Panama? What path will quickly give you Panamanian citizenship? And how can you get a special “travel document” visa… not actually citizenship, but the next-best thing? Rainelda answered all those questions and more.
