This has been such an eventful day that I’ll dispense with the pleasantries (though there are many here in Panama) and get right down to business…
Today we drilled down into the nitty-gritty details that can make or break your experience here (which included some very entertaining, laugh-out-loud moments).
Former Congressman and International Living legal counsel Bob Bauman started it off by explaining how Panama’s history and political stability led to its stature as the world’s leading offshore haven.
Just some quick (and inspiring) data that Bob shared: The inflation rate in Panama has averaged 1.4% for 30 years. Panama enjoys one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America and has the highest personal income levels in all of Latin America. The unemployment rate in Panama? Just 6%. You can imagine how all this affects crime stats. According to today’s Latin Business Chronicle, Panama is safer than ever, having steadily climbed up the ranks to become one of the safest countries in Latin America.
And despite having recently signed a tax treaty with the U.S, Bob says, “Panama still has far more protective privacy processes than the U.S.” Panama’s trusts, private family foundations, and corporations are still among the best wealth-protection vehicles in the world.
Most of this morning’s discussions were about real estate. This morning’s speakers were explaining how to go about properly and safely buying property in Panama. (By the way, Panama real estate prices remain among the lowest in Latin America, and quality is HIGH.)
