10 of the Best Travel Apps

10 of the Best Travel Apps

If you haven’t heard of them yet, chances are you will. Apps are everywhere.

And these software programs for smart devices like iPhones, Blackberrys or tablet computers are nifty travel tools.

There are hundreds of them—many with similar functions—and they do everything from convert currencies to language translation. To give you a taste, we’ve picked 10 we like to use (and see 29 more apps below which we also like)…

FlightStatus tells you how late your flight is running so you can relax on that airport dash. You’ll find the best dumplings in Asia with Foodspotting, where users snap a photo of a dish, tag it and share it with friends. Global Wi-Fi Finder does what the name implies, helping you locate the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot wherever you are.

Using your phone’s GPS, HearPlanet turns it into an audio guide revealing the secrets of the attractions around you.

Kayak’s app is a leaner, user-friendly version of the website allowing you to search and book flights, hotels and more. MPassport lists English-speaking doctors in cities worldwide. Skype is still the champion of free-from-anywhere calls while Tripit plans and tracks your itinerary for you.

Just point your phone at a Spanish sign or menu and Wordlens translates it to English, and if you feel like traveling without leaving the house, WorldView Live lets you see the world through 6,000 CCTV cameras from Berlin to Toyko.
