Yvette Dalton was already looking for a new direction in life when a visit to her aunt in Belize set her on a new course.
“My days and nights were consumed by work and more work. So I challenged myself to look at my life and reevaluate whether the benefits of a corporate career outweighed the opportunity to spend my time differently,” says Yvette.
Yvette liked Belize so much that she took a second vacation there later that year. “I met many new friends, experienced much of the country and decided this was where I should spend some of my lifetime.”
A few months later, Yvette left her job and trained to become a certified resort and second-home property specialist. Now she lives part-time in the Cayo district of Belize and works with Rain Forest Realty. “There are beautiful mountains, rivers, rainforest, caves and ruins to explore. And just a two-hour drive east you can go to the islands for some world-class deep sea fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.”
Yvette says she has two homes now. “I’m at a transition point where I spend time between the U.S. and Belize. I get the best of both worlds that way. I like being able to spend time in both, since I have family and friends in each. I travel when I want, go where I want to go, and get to spend a lot more time with my family and friends. I use to have to ‘fit’ them into my corporate outlook calendar and missed a lot of life.”
Advice for somebody interested in making a part-time move? “Rent a place for three to six months where you think you might want to live. This gives you a real opportunity to understand if you’re in the right area.” And, Yvette says, “it’s not always what a destination can do for you. I advise you to find a way to give back to your new community, too. Now that’s the real balance in life.”
