The Best Welcome in El Salvador

Date: 03/21/2007

Casa Miramar is a private beach-front house, in the Gonzales family for four generations.

Señor Gonzales is a judge in San Salvador, and his wife, Rebeca, is an international lawyer. Usually they live and work in the city, but open up their house to paying guests on the weekends. The hospitality is superb, including some extras like free pancakes and coffee at breakfast, and they invited all their guests to dinner on Sunday. I can’t remember ever having been treated so kindly.

As for the beach, the water is warm, the sand clean, and the tourists few and far between. The waves are gentle enough to allow beginners to learn to surf safely. You can rent a board for $10 a day, or take a lesson for the same price. More advanced surfers will also find waves to suit their needs. On a one-mile stretch of beach, I never counted more than 20 bathers or surfers. I’m definitely going to return.

I visited Playa El Tunco, in La Libertad, El Salvador via mini-bus. Round-trip (from Antigua, Guatemala) plus two nights stay at Casa Miramar cost $80 (El Salvador no longer uses the colon, just dollars).
