Location: Eastern Asia, bordering the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, between North Korea and Vietnam.

Area total: 5,963,275 square miles (9,596,961 square kilometers)

Population: 1,343,239,923 (July 2012 est.)

Capital: Beijing

Geography: The world’s fourth largest country (after Russia, Canada, and the U.S.); Mount Everest on the border with Nepal is the world’s tallest peak.

Climate: Extremely diverse; tropical in south to subarctic in north.

Government type: Communist state

Chief of state: President Hu Jintao (since 15 March 2003); Vice President Xi Jinping (since 15 March 2008)

Head of government: Premier Wen Jiabao (since 16 March 2003)

Languages: Standard Chinese or Mandarin (Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect), Yue (Cantonese), Wu (Shanghainese), Minbei (Fuzhou), Minnan (Hokkien-Taiwanese), Xiang, Gan, Hakka dialects, minority languages (see Ethnic groups entry)note: Mongolian is official in Nei Mongol, Uighur is official in Xinjiang Uygur, and Tibetan is official in Xizang (Tibet).

Religions: Daoist (Taoist), Buddhist, Christian 3%-4%, Muslim 1%-2% note: officially atheist (2002 est.)
