Which Celebrity is Scouting Panama Now?

Date: 03/06/2007

At first we thought he was here to buy real estate-excited sources whispered to local media that controversial movie star and producer Mel Gibson was in Panama, checking out land for sale around the popular (and slightly remote) beaches of Palenque and Pedasí.

The star was spotted dining with national icon, singer, and Tourism Minister, Ruben Blades. "Ah, Gibson will invest in tourism projects," whispered some.

However, a few days later, Gibson's mission here is clear. According to Panama's La Prensa, the hot-headed Aussie might film a movie here. Panamanian screenwriter Jose Chevy Severino gave Gibson a script about famed explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, and Gibson has been scouting the various locations visited by the legendary explorer. If the movie becomes a reality, it could cost anywhere between $10 and $200 million, says Severino, a good portion of which would be spent in Panama.

Gibson is not the only superstar to have a new-found interest in Panama-just a few months ago Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were spotted touring Panama City. Who'll be next? We'll let you know…
