More good news for Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Earlier this year, the government announced plans for a $600 million modernization of the two principal ports, Limon and Moin. Now, U.S. and Costa Rican investors are planning to build a $40 million, 398-slip marina for what is perhaps the most popular tourist destination on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, rasta-flavored Puerto Viejo (south of Limon and Moin) in the canton of Talamanca.

Costa Rica Passes Trade Agreement in Landmark Referendum

Yesterday a slim majority of voters in Costa Rica approved DR-CAFTA (the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement). Second Vice President Suggested Unethical Campaign Tactics

DR-CAFTA (the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement) is facing serious controversy and resistance in Costa Rica. The nation will vote on the agreement in a referendum this October 7. Costa Rica is the only participating country that has not ratified the agreement, often referred to simply as CAFTA (in addition to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, participants include the U.S., El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua). If passed, CAFTA will create a free trade zone in which tariffs on some 80% of U.S. exports to the region are eliminated (most of the participating countries' exports already enter the U.S. tariff-free).
