Iasi: A City for Your Soul and Your Pocket Book

Date: 06/12/2007

My contact in Romania, Kevin Stillmock, has just shared some inside information with me about a place that looks set to be a hot-spot. This is what he told me:

"Iasi, Romania's second largest city, has more churches per square foot than any other city in Europe. I first visited the city seven years ago, after missing a turn on the highway en-route to Bucharest-and it's turned into a lucky break.

This cosmopolitan student city is bubbling with multicultural activities. Greek food and Russian music go hand in hand, and in the evening the discos, bars, and cafés bustle with students and other city residents. On weekends, the main road closes and the townspeople come out in droves to visit the local churches and perhaps to catch a play at the stately theater where the actress who played Mary in the Passion of Christ, Maia Morgenstern, routinely performs.
Iasi isn't just a city for the soul, but for the pocket book as well. It's a real bargain (and investment profit opportunity) as far as Europe or even Romania is concerned. The best bargain is in real estate where you can find luxury right down to a doorman and private gym for what you would pay for a standard apartment on the outskirts in other cities.
But this opportunity won't last long. Iasi is quickly becoming the dot-com capital of Eastern Europe and is at the crossroads of the EU and CIS (former Soviet Union), attracting multinational companies at a maddening pace. By this time next year, Iasi could be looking at property values much more similar to other European cities."
