3 Perks to Working as a Travel Consultant

During my previous life in the U.S., I used to wake up every day at the same time, drive to work on the same route, and report in Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—often evenings and weekends too. As a person who doesn’t do well with routines, it was a life that made me feel trapped.

Fast forward seven years and I’m now loving life and feel happier, healthier, and more motivated than ever.

What’s changed?

I now make my living helping people arrange incredible overseas adventures, showing them a part of the world they never even knew existed. And I get to partake in some of that excitement too.

I live full-time in Costa Rica, taking people on tours that they’ll never forget—or either will I. Whitewater rafting, tubing, surfing, hiking, and whale watching, are just a taste of my everyday life. But I have plenty more to be thankful for. Here are a few of the benefits that make tours the best way to earn an income overseas.

For those that don’t do well with a routine prescribed by others, being a travel consultant provides an empowering level of flexibility.

You can make a daily schedule that suits your natural body rhythms and there is time in the day to get a variety of tasks done. Long gone are the days of trying to squeeze in a trip to the bank and grocery shopping over lunch and finding you don’t have time to actually eat.

These days, life is more relaxed and I’m more efficient at what I do. The online nature of my business allows me to work from home and take the time during the day to do what makes me happy and healthy. There is time for a surf break or to attend a mid-morning workout session at the beach. My routine is up to me.

Pursue Your Interests

What do you love to do? What gets you excited and into a state of flow? For me, it’s surfing and spending time outside doing physical activities. And that’s why I like to base my tours around those kinds of activities.

One of the greatest benefits of a tour business is that you can use your creativity to design trips where you can share your knowledge and passion with your clients. Your clients will love being in your presence as you, the local expert, show them where to catch the best fish, or where to find the best wine, or perhaps you know of a secret waterfall hike that ends with a spectacular lookout point to the Pacific Ocean…

Your clients will happily pay for your expertise and the joy that comes from sharing your passion has amazing ripple effects.

Enjoy More Travel

Take your interests and new clients on the road exploring with you. You’re never limited in where you operate your tour business. How about offering a biking tour through Mendoza and checking out some new vineyards? What about a surf and gourmet cuisine tour through Spain? As time goes by, you’ll develop a following and your clients will happily follow you around the world, trusting you can provide them with an amazing experience—and you’ll be getting paid to do it!

The tour industry offers a rewarding lifestyle and you get to decide how big or small you want to go. Perhaps you’d like to offer a once-a-year trip to your friends in your book club or you’d like to go all-in and start a full-time business. With tours, you have that option. It’s an overseas income you can tailor to your life. And it’s something you can get started on today.
