4 Ways Your Skills Could Pay…

Do you remember when only the largest companies had websites? Minions in fancy corporate offices cranked out prose to cut and paste onto the page. And websites could go for years unchanged. Mostly they were boring brochures, online.

But that’s all changed.

Almost every business now has—or wants to have—a lively and informative website. Making a website is much simpler now than it was in the early days of the Internet. The process has improved so much that, these days, just about any business can afford one…

And that’s why there’s a great (and growing) opportunity for you if you’re good with words.

Working with words is one of those freelancing skills that you can do from anywhere on the planet. If you plan to live overseas…and want to have the comfort of knowing you can earn a part-time or full-time income from wherever you are…you’re in luck.

Why? Because all those websites are under constant pressure to add new, valuable information. For most, having interesting content means more visits—which translates into more business.

And as a result, this has created a flood of opportunity for one particular skill: the ability to work with words.

The good news is you don’t have to be Shakespeare or a New York Times author to participate. There are simple writing assignments that you could already be suited for.

Let me give you just four examples:

1. Proofreading

If you have a good eye for mistakes and mis-spellings and a knack with grammar, proofreading is a great place to start. You simply offer to read somebody else’s writing and make corrections for a fee.

You can work as much or as little as you want when proofreading—a constant stream of assignments is available on the web at all times. A quick look at just one of the top five job and project networks right now shows me 254 buyers who want proofreading help.

2. Editing

A step up from proofreading, editing will suit you if you are good at taking a rough draft and improving on it.

The goal of online editing is to take something someone else has written and make it more presentable to a web audience—while still preserving the meaning of the original piece.

If you were ever a teacher or someone who wrote or corrected reports or other business documents… you could do this in your sleep.

3. Writing Web Pages

Businesses need someone to write simple web pages for them—and that’s where you come in. The client provides you with information about their business…and you translate that info into simple, easy-to-follow text on their website.

There’s no shortage of variety in this work. You could be writing the “About” page for a local plumbing company one day…and explaining how to water grass during the summer the next.

4. Article Writing

As the Internet has continued to grow in size and readership, the specific skillset of writing articles for the web has emerged. That’s because articles of between 200 and 500 words are the meat-and-potatoes of web writing.

If you already have good writing and organization skills, all you need is a little bit of training to write articles for the web. The training usually takes a few short weeks and you can do it from the comfort of your computer. This training can increase the amount you are paid for your writing by anything from 20% —all the way to 100%.

So now that you have a clearer idea of the writing and editing roles available online, where do you go from here? And how do you deal with practical aspects, like finding clients, negotiating contracts and delivering your work?

It’s easier than you might think. There are over 200 job and project networks on the Internet…which means that right now, you can scan literally thousands of open writing assignments every day to find your clients.

Job networks have streamlined the process of using their websites… so finding clients and getting paid is easy to do from your computer… anywhere in the world.

Meaning you could start your adventure overseas—sooner than you think.
