Like so many other baby boomers, my husband and I had been dreaming about and planning our retirement for several years. Life in Nacogdoches, TX was becoming more stressful each year — maintaining 21 acres, a house, jobs becoming increasingly demanding with longer hours. There was no time left for us.
The stress reached a breaking point; it was time to take some serious action toward retirement. We decided to sell everything we owned and start living our dream five years ahead of schedule.
Today, we live on Cozumel, Mexico. Off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, this beautiful island is a short 30-minute ferry ride across the stunningly clear turquoise blue Caribbean waters to the mainland. The scuba diving and snorkeling is among the best in the world with dozens of breathtaking reefs to explore. And the sunsets… they are truly magnificent… skies of pink and orange reflecting in the ocean waters.
We can spend the day at one of the many beach clubs… snorkeling… swimming… jet skiing… having lunch. The “wild side” of the island is yet another treat. There is no electricity on the east side of the island… it is a turtle sanctuary that is well protected during laying season. There are open stretches of beach with beautiful crashing waves. Stop at one of the restaurant bars to cool off as you make your way along the road, enjoying the surf or kiteboarding.
Snorkel, swim with the dolphins and manatees, or explore the lush grounds of Chankanaab Marine Park. Visit San Gervasio where you’ll find the ruins of an ancient Mayan civilization.
Cozumel has so much to offer. Away from the front streets, you will find wonderful locally-owned shops and the mercado. The merchants will entice you with their wares and are some of the most welcoming, friendly people I’ve ever met. Perhaps you’ll be on the island when the Cuban ballet or a musical artist is performing; perhaps there’s a title boxing match; maybe it’s time for the Ironman competition. Then there are the many gifted and talented artists. There’s something for everyone.
We love the peaceful life we have created here. We have wonderful friends; expatriates and natives alike. Stress is a thing of the past. We do still need to supplement our retirement funds, but living here is so affordable.
As a subscriber to International Living for several years, I had decided before retiring to become a copywriter with the instruction available through AWAI (American Writers and Artists, Inc.). I took an accelerated course and attended an intensive workshop before choosing to pursue business-to-business freelance copywriting. At this stage, my work is project to project; the goal is to work no more than 20 hours per week. My husband runs his advertising business from our condo overlooking the ocean—quite the inspiration.
For both of us, the work situation is ideal and completely online. We work in the morning and have the afternoon and evening to enjoy our island life… his passion is diving, and I enjoy time in the sun with friends.
It simply doesn’t get any better than this. May you find your paradise and start living the dream sooner than later. Life is short, and it’s easier than you may imagine!
