Like many people, I grew up believing the expression that “if you want it done right, you’ve got to do it yourself.”
These days I make big money from e-books—sometimes as much as $5,000 a day—but I don’t do it all myself.
I let someone else do the writing…while I enjoy traveling to countries I never thought I’d visit…touring around Tuscany in Italy…or going on safari in Africa.
When I decided that I wanted to dive head-first into the exploding e-book revolution, I had a decision to make.
Was I going to inch my way in by writing myself? Or would I blast off the launch pad by getting others to do the writing?
Was I going to lock myself in a room pounding away on my laptop? Or was I going to head off to Barcelona with my laptop…and use it to check in on my stable of writers?
It wouldn’t be hard to guess which choice I made.
But if you’re like I was at the time, you’re probably thinking “where am I going to find all those writers? And how am I going to afford them?”
Those were my first thoughts and I almost let them prevent me from creating some pretty serious royalty income.
But what I discovered was that there was a huge universe of qualified and willing writers who couldn’t wait to tackle my projects.
Take my idea for natural remedies for heartburn and acid reflux, for example.
I created some simple specifications for an e-book and found a freelance writer, who is a certified nutritionist, to write it.
Now I didn’t know much about heartburn or acid reflux but I could put myself in the position of someone who suffered regularly from that condition—I occasionally had it myself—and ask myself what kind of information would I like to have to cure that awful feeling.
In just a few hours, with a little surfing on the web, I came up with a rough outline for the book. I included that in my specifications to the ghostwriter and she did the rest.
In about 30 days, I had uploaded an e-book version of the finished product and within a few weeks of that I had rocketed to the top of the category at Amazon.
Within the first 90 days I had recouped my investment, including the fee for the ghostwriter. That was more than two years ago and I’ve been in profit ever since.
I find my writers on eLance…but you can also hire writers on oDesk, Outsource, and hundreds of other sites that have thousands of freelancers waiting for your projects.
And there are some of them who are pretty talented who will work for a lot less than you’d expect. We’ve had e-books done for as little as $300 and that includes the research and the writing. Now that wasn’t for a huge e-book but it was long enough to convey the information.
I realize that for some people right now $300 is a stretch, but in the whole scheme of things it’s a bargain for someone to take this off your back if you don’t want to write the e-book yourself. If you know how to position your e-book and you’ve picked a good topic—and I’m going to show you how—you can easily earn your money back in the first month’s royalties.
I own e-books written by others where I recovered all my costs in the first 60 to 90 days. And I’ve collected years of royalty payments since then. How do you think I finance my trips to Barcelona, Capetown, Italy and the like?
It’s not hard to learn how to hire freelancers but like everything, there are some important principles to follow—and I have some top tips to share with you.
Now would you rather do it yourself, or do you want someone to do it for you?
