The e-book revolution happened really quickly. In fact, it’s not so long ago that e-book rights weren’t a consideration when a publisher was buying rights from an author.
That means there are a lot of living authors whose books have been published in paperback…but not as an e-book.
And because their publisher didn’t buy the e-book rights back then…the author can sell them to you now.
So how about licensing an existing book that’s not yet in Kindle format and paying the author part of the royalties you collect. I did this when I contacted Earl Nightingale’s widow and published an e-book version of his classic, The Strangest Secret.
There are 9 million print books at Amazon and around 2 million Kindle books so that means there are about 7 million books that haven’t been converted (and that doesn’t count the millions more that aren’t even at Amazon).
Of course, some of those print books are published by major publishers who did buy e-book rights…and aren’t likely to sell them to you. But there are many older books by major publishers that were published before e-books so the publisher didn’t purchase the e-rights from the author. Those authors are prime candidates for licensing…as are the authors who self-published their print books and don’t yet have a Kindle version.
That’s usually because they don’t understand how simple it is to convert a print book to e-book. But you do…or at least you will with the information you can learn from me. Find out more about my e-book strategies here.
Think you have to go through a lot of books to find the right candidates? Maybe so, but the biggest gold mine in Alaska goes through 33 tons of material to produce an ounce of gold, and they’ve been happily doing it for years!
Want me to make your search for gold even easier? Go online and find websites that are selling “remaindered” books. Remaindered books are printed books that are no longer selling well and whose remaining unsold copies are being liquidated by the publisher at greatly reduced prices.
Many times the publisher will allow remaindered books to “go out of print” and in many publishing contracts that means all the rights to revert to the author. And many times the reason a book goes out of print is not that it isn’t a good book…it goes out of print because the author doesn’t know how to market it.
And here’s another secret I want to share with you. Once you know how to get e-books ranked (and you can learn ALL the secrets in a handful of hours) you can use that expertise to publish new e-books, converted from existing print books, on behalf of others.
Sometimes the only changes you need to make to get a book jumpstarted are changing the title and creating a new cover. The book, Biscuits, Fleas and Pump Handles had paltry sales until its author, Zig Ziglar, changed the title to See You At The Top, which has sold more than 2 million copies under the “new” title.
Let me confirm what you’re probably thinking. This is definitely a go-the-extra-mile strategy…but as Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach is fond of saying, “There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.”
This may be the simplest of all my strategies because you don’t have to write it and you don’t have to find someone else to write it. It’s already written and ready to start earning royalty income for you.
