How Much to Buy a Home in Boquete, Panama?

I smell coffee nearly everywhere I go in Boquete, Panama. It may be the imaginings of a happily caffeinated brain… Or it’s the fact that there are so many little cafés in this coffee-producing region.

Visit the most popular producer of Panamanian coffee at the Café Ruiz coffee shop. Here you can sit and revel in the feeling of pure contentment that comes from perfect weather, views…and coffee, of course.

The sweet cottage is typical Boquete. There’s a gabled roof over a front terrace, potted plants behind a railing just beneath the eaves. The rounded bushes in front are dotted with luscious red blooms. The almost chocolaty smell of a rich French roast wafts through the air, its tendrils reaching out to tempt passersby. It’s a hard choice: continue enjoying the misty cool…and the surreal sensation of being surrounded by green…as you hike up the mountain. Or toast those chilled fingertips with a relaxing cup of Joe.

Many residents describe Boquete as near perfect, offering the “best of both worlds” in any given scenario. Welcoming locals and a big, fun expat community…a low cost of living and luxury offerings…amazing mountain scenery and proximity to city, beach, and more. Though the district’s popularity has skyrocketed, its property is still high-value.

Property in Boquete, Panama for $90,000

A three-bedroom, two-bath home in central Boquete was just listed for $90,000. At approximately 2,900 square feet, it’s spacious, and the lot is over 5,300 square feet. Excellent value for a home with mountain views, indoor laundry room, storage room, and large patio.

You can find excellent bargains 10 to 15 minutes outside town. One home between Boquete and David (the capital of Panama’s Chiriqui Province) is just a 15-minute drive from Boquete’s main plaza. Here, your dollar stretches even further. For $136,000 you can buy a new home with five bedrooms and four baths…completely furnished. It comes with air conditioning units and ceiling fans already installed (though most residents rarely use air conditioning), plus a four-car garage.

Not ready to buy yet? You could rent a large, upscale home like that one for $700 to $900 a month. Or go it like a local…it’s not hard to find something between 800 and 1,000 square feet for under $500. That is, as long as you’re okay with being 15 minutes or so from town. The scenery’s pretty everywhere you go, so I sure wouldn’t mind.

A home in Boquete Town features eye-catching stone and hardwood detail. The fenced property—about an acre—is private and planted with orange trees. The home itself is on two levels and has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, plus a storage room, terrace, and second-floor balcony. The ground level features a dining room and a living room, with an additional living area upstairs. There’s even a basketball court. Asking price: $200,000…negotiable.

In the $300,000 range you’ll find homes in Valle Escondido, a chic golfing community where I can never seem to put my camera down.

The warm, terracotta-toned architecture blends so prettily into the natural setting. One home here comes completely furnished for $325,000.

Built about four years ago, the 2,400-square foot home sits on a lot of nearly 5,000 square feet with its own garden. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the space is well divided for an airy effect. The kitchen features top-of-the-line appliances. The riverside community has a social area, pool, gym, tennis courts, and park. You’ll also find every amenity you’d expect to find at a resort, from onsite spa, restaurant and coffee shop to onsite potable spring water and hydroelectric plant, high-speed Internet, and satellite television.

The Boquete region simply offers the best of all Panama has to offer. Coffee, flowers, restaurants and cafes…expat activities, hiking, birding and more…and with a wide range of property to choose from, the best overall value you’ll find outside Panama City.
