How this Office Worker and Mom Developed a Portable Career

I love sitting on my seaside deck in the morning feeling the warm ocean breeze as I upload new shots to sell online. Most of my shots are photos I have taken during vacations and traveling.

As a teenager, I dreamt of being a photographer someday, and for lots of life reasons I did not have the opportunity to pursue that dream. However, after three decades of living a normal adult life, raising children and having a regular paying office job, I decided it was time to get back to living my dreams.

Now, after a little training and guidance, I’m making money selling my photos to agencies.

I have always had a camera of some sort, mostly the point-and-shoot variety, but my heart and soul was really waiting for a chance to be more creative—and, if I could earn some cash, it would definitely be a bonus. I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplish it, but forged ahead anyway. With my children all grown and living on their own, it was now my time. I had to put my dream into action.

I started taking landscape photos of areas in my hometown and also by getting family and friends to be my models, which has actually turned into a small successful family portraiture business. A few very close friends that are real estate agents have commissioned me to take shots for their listings. I have also done some fashion photography for a local store owner, as well as engagement and wedding photos.

Before achieving all these shoots, I joined several online photo groups for guidance, inspiration, and to learn different techniques which led me to discover stock photography. I was intrigued with the idea that I could possibly sell my photos online.

I researched many stock agency’s guidelines and qualifications to find the right fit for me. I think I uploaded about 10 pictures the first time and was quite disappointed when they started coming back as rejected, however two photos did get selected and that inspired me to do more.

Once I understood how to properly edit my photos, it became an easy process. I have several online sales happening and I’m still thrilled every time I get a new email notifying me that I’ve sold another photo. Some photos sell again and again, making this a very easy repeat business. Work once and keep getting paid over and over for the same photo. It is quite an amazing feeling.

“Little ole me, selling pictures online, pinch me!” I say. This just goes to prove that if I can do it, then anyone can. And yes, getting paid to do so, is quite a bonus!
