If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be leading the life I live today, I would have called you crazy.
I get paid to travel to far-flung and exotic places—Madagascar one day, Iceland, or Costa Rica the next. I have no boss. I travel on my own terms, whenever and wherever I like. And it’s all thanks to my travel blog.
In 2008, I decided to get serious with my blog and transform it into a full-time income. I had no idea where it would lead me, but I wanted to try my luck.
It’s been 10 years since I quit my job to chase my dreams. Today, I’d like to share some lessons I’ve learned from my personal experience and help you create your own dream income with a travel blog:
Develop Your Voice
Forget about writing generic city guides or top 10 lists. The thing that differentiates blogs from magazines or newspapers is the personal voice you can give it. Readers want to hear your thoughts and your crazy stories. Be open and honest, and most importantly, be yourself.
Be Different and Stand Out
Ask yourself, what are you all about? What makes you different from other people? Perhaps you’re a single mum traveling with your child? Do you have a sense of humor that you’re able to convey with words? Find that one thing that makes you unique and it will set you apart from the crowd.
Be Versatile and Diversify
To make a living from your travel blog, you need to wear many hats and be prepared to earn from multiple income streams. The relatively new industry of blogging is always evolving. Try different things to see what works for you and what doesn’t.
In the first two years, I made most of my income from web advertising (banner ads and sponsored advertorials). Then I branched into creating my own travel magazine and destination marketing (where I get paid to go on press trips).
Currently, the majority of my income comes from partnerships with travel brands, creating campaigns for companies, brand ambassadorships, and social media consulting work.
Don’t Give Up
The important thing to know is that success doesn’t come overnight—work hard at building your readership before expecting to reap any rewards. Success comes to those who dare to act on their dreams. Believe me, it’s well worth it.
