Back in 2009, I was taking a six-week holiday at a beach resort on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand.
Almost everyone there was on vacation, of course. And they were having a great time, enjoying the fun and sun, and spending money. Lots of it.
Not earning it.
But not me…
That’s because I’m a freelance copywriter. That just means I write sales letters, promotional emails, and other communications…just easy, conversational English.
And freelance copywriters can earn income from anywhere in the world. All you need is a laptop and an internet connection and you’re good to go.
This means I didn’t have to give up earning income—and burn through my savings like the other vacationers—to enjoy an extended stay in Koh Phangan. All I needed to do was set aside a few hours a day to write, which I usually did in the mornings when it was nice and quiet.
But that’s just the beginning.
Once you’re established as a freelance copywriter, you’ll have the opportunity to earn big-time income from something called “royalties.”
Royalties are like commissions in sales. In other words, you get a percentage of what you sell. Typically, royalties for freelance copywriters range from 2% to 5% of net revenues.
And it’s royalties that made that particular stay in Koh Phangan extremely lucrative for me.
You see, while I was in Koh Phangan, I was working on an assignment to encourage people to sign up for a paid newsletter. It wasn’t a difficult assignment. Far from it. In fact, it only took me a few days to write the entire first draft.
However, that one letter I wrote in Koh Phangan became one of the best-selling letters of all time for my client. And that client has continued to run this letter—and bring in tons of revenue from it—up to this day.
Here’s the best part.
Since I negotiated a royalty agreement prior to writing that letter, I’ve been getting paid a percentage on all sales from that letter for the past six years and running.
So…how much money have I made from just that one letter?
Let me put it to you this way.
Last year, a full five years after I wrote that simple letter, I earned over $5,000 in royalties just from that one letter.
Not a bad deal for spending just a few hours a day writing in the mornings for a few days—then spending the rest of my free time soaking up the sun in Thailand!
Yes, freelance copywriting is a great gig for income-minded world travelers and expats in search of unlimited freedom. And once you start earning royalties, the income potential—no matter where you want to be in the world—can be tremendous.
