Living the Dream in Panama with an Online Income

You keep hearing advice about establishing an online business and creating your own income source by “thinking outside the box.” Jennifer Daniels, 58, took that advice and transformed her traditional medical practice into a work-from-home, online business in David, Panama.

She explored Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America before settling on Panama.

“The weather is great, the people are friendly, and a lot of them speak English,” she says. “It’s in the right time zone to stay in touch with my family, and they drive on the right side of the road!”

She moved to David, Panama in 2008, what she calls “another step along the journey through life.”

“I’m happy here, and I love living in Panama,” Jennifer says. “David is a great place for me because I really like warmer weather. I do a lot of walking and bicycling and sometimes go on hikes with a local hiking club. My husband, Gary, and I have a lot of fun exploring in his off-road buggy. And when I need to decompress my favorite masseuse comes to my home to give me a massage.”

She also appreciates the affordable cost of living in David.

“Gary and I rent a large, beautiful home and live a very comfortable lifestyle,” she says. “Our monthly expenses are less than a quarter of what they would be in the U.S.”

To support herself Jennifer pursues an online business.

“Basically, I have an online marketing company where I sell alternative health-related products,” Jennifer explains. “I offer one-to-one health counseling for my clients via Skype and a monthly question and answer session online.” She also sells her books and unique herbal capsules.

“I was invited to fill a slot on a talk radio site, so I said yes. Now I do two weekly programs and do guest visits on other shows. Even though I don’t practice medicine like I did in the U.S., I still use my learning and experience to help people with their health problems.”

Jennifer graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She then established a family medical practice in her home town of Syracuse, New York.

“I was taught the traditional Standard of Care, but I found many of my patients responded better to natural therapies, including dietary and lifestyle changes, along with herbal supplements and cleansing treatments,” Jennifer recalls.

“I created a website to market my products and decided to relocate overseas, where I could live and practice medicine the way I choose.”

A great advantage of an internet business is the low start-up costs. “You can get started for less than $1,000,” Jennifer says.

Initially her revenue was around $1,000 a month from her online business. Now, four years later, she has increased that at least tenfold, and she doesn’t invest heavily in marketing.

For Jennifer, relocating to Panama made it all possible.

“It’s easy to live here and start a business because life is much less stressful than in the U.S.,” she says. “The Panamanian people are open-minded and non-judgmental. Here you can really enjoy the freedom that many people dream about.”
