A few years ago, I made a life-changing decision. I knew there were happy people in the world, pursuing their dreams, working “jobs” that were more like passions, and enjoying every moment.
I wanted to be one of those people.
Knowing I could have a much lower cost of living overseas, the decision to move was an easy one. The challenge was how to earn an income I could take with me. Since I’m too young to retire, I needed to reinvent myself in my new country.
I realized that I had a passion for writing that I never pursued in my former career. I found an online course for copywriting and studied at my own pace, sitting on my sunny balcony in Medellin, Colombia enjoying the near-perfect weather we enjoy daily.
In no time, writing opportunities were popping up everywhere. Projects blossomed from a chance meeting with a business owner on the street, or a random Facebook post seeking writers. Sometimes a friend of a friend needed my writing skills and even my dentist wanted me to update the copy on his website. I actively seek certain jobs, but demand is so high in this business that opportunities seem to fall in my lap from the most unlikely places.
And because I make my own hours and can work from anywhere with reliable internet, I can travel as I please. In the first half of 2017 alone, I’ll be spending two weeks in the Dominican Republic, three weeks on the Caribbean island of Grenada, and seven weeks in the U.S., visiting family and friends. A trip through South America is also on the cards before the end of the year.
My typical day is never typical anymore. I no longer use an alarm clock, unless I need to catch a flight. Some days I write for a while in the morning, take a break to study Spanish, eat when I’m hungry, and then research or pitch to clients in the afternoon.
Occasionally, I’ll meet a friend for lunch or treat myself to a pedicure for only $7. Two-for-one happy hour is a great time to catch up with neighbors and swap stories about our adventures abroad. When my friends and family visit from the States, I act as tour-guide, showcasing my beautiful adopted hometown, taking day trips, and sampling local cuisine.
Three years ago, I had no idea that my life could be this stress-free and relaxed. Copywriting allows me to do what I want, when I want. Right now, I want to go to the pool, so my next story will just have to wait a bit, while I enjoy another perfect day in paradise.
