Panama: Don’t Believe Everything You Read on the Internet

Coming into the city at mid-afternoon, the plane flies low across the bright sky over the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Below, the Pearl Islands lay strung across the azure landscape like the jewels they are.

Lush with green jungle and surrounded by golden beaches, one has just a rickety wooden boat dock, another is large enough to support a small village, and all 100+ are stunningly beautiful.

Once on the ground, the shuttle van speeds toward the gleaming city, and eyes again are drawn to the ocean view whizzing by to the left where daredevil pelicans circle and then, in an instant, fold their wings and plunge like arrows into the surf.

It’s good to be back in Panama, the tiny country on the southern edge of the northern hemisphere, one of the only countries to bridge two continents… and the only country in the world where you can see the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean and set on the Atlantic.

Did you know that?

If not, don’t worry…there are so many things unique to Panama that it’s hard to track them all. For instance…

Panama is the only country in Central America with no hurricanes and no destructive earthquakes. It’s the only country that uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency (but wisely eschews the silly penny, issuing coins—called Balboas—only in denominations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents). Panama is the only country in Latin America where you can drink the tap water practically everywhere. And it’s the only country in the world where you’ll find a protected, tropical rainforest within city limits….pure beauty.

Panama is the only country in the world with a $2 billion revenue stream on its doorstep, although “stream” is not the right way to describe the wonder of the world that is the Panama Canal, making Panama the only country with a waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (and a big reason for this country’s economic stability and success).

I could go on and on. Every week, it seems, Panama tops another index, whether for its solid GDP, technology and infrastructure, globalization, tourism… Panama is the only country in the #1 top spot on The New York Times list of travel destinations for 2012….the only country with three “first-ever” construction projects now being built: The Panamera (first Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Latin America); the Trump Ocean Club (the region’s tallest building); and Frank Gehry’s first Latin American design, the BioMuseo natural history museum.

But what’s really important for you to know is this:

Panama is the Only Country in the World That Offers so Much to Foreign Retirees

I’m Suzan Haskins, IL’s Latin America editor, and I’m delighted to be your on-the-scene reporter from the 2012 Fast-Track Panama: Lifestyle and Opportunity Conference. Over the next three days, I’ll be serving as your eyes and ears, taking you behind the curtain to learn exactly what’s going on at this conference. All the details, all the special insider information, all the valuable “skinny” on this little country.

There are more than 38 presentations to cover over the upcoming days—by my tally, that’s nearly 20 hours of expertise to be shared—and not a single presentation is a repeat or rehash. It’s all brand-new, up-to-date, critically pertinent info.

The first expert speaker to take the stage today was Jessica Ramesch, International Living’s dedicated Panama editor. As emcee Dan Prescher said, “Jessica knows more about Panama than any other four people I know who profess to be a Panama expert.”

Jessica has an infectious passion for Panama, and especially for this gleaming chrome-and-glass city where this Fast-Track Panama Conference is being held.

“This is the only country in the region with a First-World city,” Jessica said. And in her opinion, Panama is the only country with such wonderfully weird people (“Because our culture is so unique…”) and the only country that’s home to the famous New York Yankee pitching phenom Mariano Rivera….and one of the only countries in the world that did not suffer a banking crisis in recent years.

Sense a theme here? Yep…Panama is one-of-a-kind…an “only…”

But back to that World-Class Retiree Benefits Program…

Panamanian attorney Rainelda Mata-Kelly dug deep into that subject this afternoon, as she explained Panama’s residency requirements and how to qualify.

Panama’s immigration law was changed in Feb. 2008, after nearly 50 years, but you will still find outdated information out there, especially on some websites. And so Rainelda cautioned:

“Don’t Believe Everything You Read on the Internet…”

Panama’s focus remains on attracting foreign pensioners, and there is one pensioner residency visa in particular that makes the most sense for the average foreign retiree. (There’s another visa, Rainelda said, that’s not popular at all but sometimes gets confused with the pensioner visa. It’s expensive and restrictive and she doesn’t recommend it.)

Instead, she told us about the easiest ways to residency…what your passport must have… She ran down the list of documents you’ll need, and told us what every document you bring MUST contain. (By the way, all documentation from overseas must be “Apostilled” if you are from the U.S. What does that mean? Rainelda explained…)

And what are the requirements to qualify for a pensioner visa? There are two easy ways…Rainelda shared all. She also explained what items you can bring with you duty-free and how long your window is open to do that…and she explained what, exactly, discounts and savings you’ll receive via your pensioner visa.

There is one particular visa you can easily obtain if you purchase real estate in Panama… And another that allows you qualify via your IRA funds… And one that’s specifically tailored to business investors. And an employee visa… And an executive visa…

As for dependents, Rainelda explained, once and for all, who can qualify under your visa and who can’t.

Want the details? You’ll get them when you listen in to the recordings we’re making of this conference. (I’d like to share every detail from today, but it’s hard to keep up…and I do want you to get the true, accurate, straight-from-the-experts information.)

So Here’s Your No-Risk Way To Learn Exactly What We’re Learning This Week

There’s just far too much information to put here.

But… there’s a way that you can get every bit of the important information from the Fast-Track Panama: Lifestyle and Opportunity Conference…

The Next Best Thing to Being Here

You can have all the most important information and benefits from this event …

All of the things we’re learning here…

For instance, former congressman Bob Bauman (and lead legal counsel for both International Living and The Sovereign Society) says “Panama is the leading offshore haven in the world today.” What does that mean? Listen in and find out.

Bob freely admitted that back when he served in Congress, he was wrong about the Panama Canal treaty (he opposed it). Its ratification has been a benefit to both the U.S. and Panama, he says. “This country makes sense in so many ways. And in many ways, these days, it puts the U.S. to shame.”

Bob, who lives in South Florida, shared some basic facts about Panama (that you definitely should know about) and he said, “Three-and-a-half million people live in Panama, and more people speak English here than they do in Miami.” Take that…

Plus, “Panama is one of the only countries with special laws that welcomes foreigners as residents and welcomes foreign investors.”

Bob had a little time to take questions from the audience and one pointed question was this: “What happens to Panama and its dollarized economy if the dollar and the euro go down the tubes?”

You can listen in to Bob’s well-informed answer, because—as I said—we’re recording every minute of this information-packed conference. (In brief, Bob is keen on Panama…but he gave a two-word piece of advice that’s worth its weight in…well…)
