“You may have sunglasses on right now, but I’d say you wear rose-colored ones more often.”
That was the first thing a reader—I’ll call him Joe—told me this afternoon. I braced myself.
He continued, “I like what you guys at International Living do, but sometimes I get the sense you omit the blemishes when you write about a place. So I was a little skeptical when I got here. I have to say, though—everything we’ve heard so far has felt like the unvarnished truth. And that’s what I came for—the benefits and the drawbacks—so I can compare my options in a realistic way.”
I’m Jennifer Stevens, IL’s Executive Editor and your live-from-the-scene reporter at this year’s Fast Track Your Retirement Overseas Conference. I’m writing from the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas where—along with our editors, guest experts, and expats—more than 800 of your fellow readers have gathered.
They’re here because—like Joe (and maybe you, too)—they’re looking for ways and places they can match their retirement dreams to a real-world spot on the ground. They’re looking for the place that’s just right for them… and they need the “straight story” if they’re going to find it.
The truth is, everybody’s preferences and priorities are different. Some are looking for a cottage on a quiet beach…others a grand apartment in a city vibrant with concerts and cafes…still others a mountain villa where the air is crisp…
Good news is: Whatever your particular fantasy may be, this week we’ve got it covered. Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Italy, Mexico, France, Nicaragua, Spain, Thailand, Uruguay, Malaysia, and beyond—we’ll be pulling back the curtain and talking about all of them.
And not in general terms. I’m talking about in-depth, specific recommendations for towns and communities, the places we know and like. Spots where you could live well for less than $1,000 a month and like royalty on $2,000 or $3,000. Like Joe said—we’ll be telling it like it is. And in a way that makes it easy to compare and contrast the destinations…so you can “wrap your head around” the options you have.
There really are amazing opportunities abroad if you know where to find them. Places where you can live better than you do now for less than it would cost you to stay home. And that’s what we’re focused on this week…helping the folks here with me to draw a line from the “dream” life they have in their mind’s eye to a place where they could make it real.
Our editors have flown in from all over the world…and they’ve brought with them dozens upon dozens of recommendations they’ve already started to share—many of which are brand new.
They’ve been traveling fools for the last few months, and they’ve shown up here with slides, commentary, and advice about places we’ve yet to even write about in International Living.
But the folks on the ground here in Vegas are getting the goods.
Can You Really Retire Better Abroad?
Our speakers started the day by running at the big question: Why even retire overseas?
The answer, ultimately, orbited around the idea of “taking control.” Sure people talked about the ready access to fresh fruits and vegetables…the health care costs being a small fraction of what they are in the States…the amazing values in real estate (like a condo in one of our very top havens for just $79,000)…the great weather…the ability to “upgrade” your lifestyle to be able to afford a place at the beach, say, or to have a maid or a gardener…
But, ultimately, it all comes down to “control”—to that good feeling that your nest egg really will go the distance, that you’re in charge of your life, your retirement, your future.
As expat John Curran puts it: When you find that place that’s right for you—and you will—”you can write your own script.”
He asked the attendees here, rhetorically, “Why did we retire to Ecuador at 44?” His answer: time. “We only have so much time; we just don’t know how much. But we knew we weren’t making the most of it.”
So they made a list of what they were looking for. It included such things as “a little land” and “a clean water source.” And then they set out to find it—on a budget of $75,000. For five years, they took trips to check places out and read widely to educate themselves about where they might find the paradise that fit their qualifications.
And they were picky. As John said, “Settle for less and that’s exactly what you’re going to get.”
So they didn’t “settle.” They kept a thumb firmly on their list of wants—and in Vilcabamba, Ecuador they found everything they were searching for…at a price they could afford. The crowd audibly gasped when he said they pay $57.55 a year for property tax…and if they pay it early, they get $5 off.
Where they are, John explained, the weather comes in three varieties: short-sleeve weather, long-sleeve weather, and sweatshirt weather. Because it’s so temperate, they don’t need heat or a/c and that cuts down on costs. “Our windows are open 24-hours a day.”
They made their dream life happen. Just like you can. They took action. They said, “I do” to the opportunity they saw. And today, as John illustrated, they’re in charge of their own destiny.
“You can’t get these years back,” he said, “so shouldn’t you do something you want to do? Our only regret is that we didn’t do it sooner.”
You know, here at home, everything we read in the press about retirement is depressing—cities go bankrupt and raid the pension coffers…health care costs leave retirees in the poorhouse…and even those folks who have saved—most haven’t socked away enough. With interest rates so low, nobody’s earning as much as they expected to. For the vast majority of baby boomers, 65 is just going to mean another day at the office. You’re at the mercy of circumstance. At least, that’s what most folks think.
But not the people here with me.
Because they know: In the best-value places overseas, you don’t have to stand idly by and hope for the best. You can live better than ever and spend less than you would to stay home. You really can be in control.
More Freedom, Less Tax
I’ve been talking with the readers here and most of them are either retired or preparing to retire soon. They want to get their hard-earned money out of the U.S. to a place where they can to maximize it. Lots are looking for more “personal freedom.” They want to be in a place where the government is less “in your face” as one put it. Lots are looking for a slower pace…a gentler lifestyle…
As I said before: Everybody is different. Still, the one thing everybody here with me has in common is that they’re taking matters into their own hands and making plans for the future.
The truth is: Nobody cares as much about your future as you do. And, frankly…if you don’t do something to make a change, nobody else is going to do it for you.
Fortunately, you’ve got amazing options. And this week, our experts here in Vegas are sharing the best of them.
Robert Bauman—a former U.S. congressman and a well-respected expert on offshore jurisdictions and privacy—spoke about how, in certain places abroad, with the right strategies in place, you can arrange your affairs to better protect yourself from the overreach of a government that is spying and prying to an unprecedented degree today. If greater privacy is a priority for you, you’ll want to hear what he had to say.
Bob made an interesting observation, as well, that I want to pass on. He said: It’s not unpatriotic to seek out a life where freedom is a priority, where you feel you’ve got the liberty to do what you like, to live the way you want to live. In fact, that’s a sentiment darn-near engrained in the American psyche.
After all, the U.S. was built by immigrants who came to our “American shores” in search of greater autonomy and freedom. For you to search for that abroad today…well, you could argue it’s a distinctly American move.
And it’s not just a greater sense of freedom you can gain abroad… You can also arrange your affairs so that you’re paying less tax… That means—to come back to a point I made earlier: you’re in control. You’re keeping more of your hard-earned income and you have greater latitude and more choice in the kinds of investments you can make as well.
Good News about Health Care: High Quality, Low Cost
Glynna Prentice focused in on what might be everybody’s greatest “area of worry.” Health care. It’s such a contentious issue back home. But in so many great destinations abroad you can access first-rate, excellent health care for pennies on the dollar.
As she put it, “You don’t have to sacrifice the quality of the care…or the caring nature of the care. It just costs less than you’re used to paying.”
Then she launched into a full-scale explanation about what your best options are abroad in terms of accessing care and arranging for insurance. Good news is: You’ve got more—and better—options than you likely imagine. And they’ll typically cost you 25% to 50% less than U.S. prices…and even less in Asia.
Glynna laid it all out with sample scenarios to make it easy to understand. She talked about what makes sense if you’re planning on spending all year in one place…as opposed to a better option if you want to spend just part of the year overseas.
There are national health plans, private health plans in specific countries, international plans, and a fourth type that many, many expats take advantage of, even though nobody ever talks about it. Glynna did though. There was a lot of mad scribbling in this room, needless to say!
She shared contacts, recommended insurers, divulged the important questions to ask to make sure you get the absolutely best insurance for you, given your personal situation.
Oh, and she answered a question that was on lots of people’s minds: What does the Affordable Care Act here in the States mean for expats living overseas?
Glynna’s response: If you’re permanently resident abroad…then the assumption is that you’re taking care of your health care abroad as well and you don’t have to be insured in the United States.
She gave so many details, solutions, and recommendations about the best ways and places to handle your health care overseas so you’re assured of top-notch care…at a small fraction of what it would cost in the States.
