“The Best Career Move I’ve Ever Made”

Five years ago I was serving up lattes at a Starbucks in South Florida. I also worked full-time at a hotel. Any time left over was spent teaching ballroom dance lessons whenever the opportunity came up.

Three jobs just to stay afloat. Something had to change.

I knew I didn’t want to keep living this way. So I decided to seriously pursue a skill I thought would give me the freedom I craved.

It was the best career move I’ve ever made.

These days, I live just a few minutes from world-class ski slopes in Salt Lake City. I get to enjoy the outdoors, no matter what the season. And sometimes I make my way to Vegas for some top-notch food and entertainment.

And of course, there are the day-to-day benefits.

I don’t have to make my way through rush hour traffic. I don’t have to ask for permission or get a form signed off to go on vacation. Best of all, I can earn a living from anywhere in the world. All I need is an Internet connection and my laptop.

And while I haven’t used my freedom to flex my travel muscles quite yet (soon…very soon!), I have used it to pursue my hobbies and passions.

I’ve been able to continue to study ballroom dancing. I’ve had the time to learn to play the piano. Heck, I’ve even dabbled in the world of DJing.

That’s because with copywriting, not only are you in control of your time, you’re also in control of your income.

How much you earn, is really up to you. There are copywriters who earn $40,000 a year part-time. Then there are those real “go-getters,” who earn six-figure—even seven-figure—salaries.

What you do with that income is up to you…

Want to go on vacation? Go for it. Want to improve your golf game? Hire the best coach in town. Want to work overseas? Book your ticket, pack your laptop and you’re good to go.

The funny thing is, working as a freelance copywriter is something most people would never even consider. For starters, I’d never heard of it. But more importantly, I hated writing. It was my absolute worst subject in school. Given the choice, I would rather watch paint dry than write an essay.

But copywriting isn’t at all like the writing I had to suffer through in school. It’s conversational writing. Much like the way you’d talk to a friend. I find this kind of writing much more enjoyable.

But in all, I’d have to say that for me, the absolute best part of this gig (aside from the time freedom and income potential) is how it has made me grow as an individual.

Since copywriting is a solo endeavor, the buck stops with you. Anything that’s right or wrong with your business is ultimately a result of YOU.

Having that high level of accountability has made me grow tremendously. It’s made me think like an entrepreneur. It’s changed my perspective on life. And it’s helped me realize that I alone am responsible for my success in life.

I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t come across copywriting. I might still be bouncing from job to job…
