What’s the best job in the world for income-minded world travelers?
In my opinion, there’s no doubt…it’s freelance copywriting.
For one, copywriters can work from almost anywhere in the world. If you’ve got a laptop and an Internet connection you’re good to go. What’s more, you set your own hours. If you want to write for a few hours in the morning then spend the rest of the day doing whatever you like…wherever you want in the world…you can do that, too.
But the best part is the income potential.
You see, the highest-paid freelance copywriters in the business can make $200,000…$300,000…$400,000 or in some cases, even $1 million a year or more.
And let me tell you…this can do wonders for your spending power, your quality of life and your retirement savings plan.
Here’s another perk. You can get paid in U.S. dollars while living in places where there is a favorable exchange rate. If you’re in a country with a low cost of living where money goes further, then you’re sitting pretty—you can choose to focus on making the big bucks or live very, very well working only a few hours a day.
It’s called “playing the latitudes” and it’s what I’ve been doing for more than seven years now.
And I haven’t chosen to set up in just one place. In fact, my job has taken me all over the world.
I’ve clicked on my laptop and put in a couple of hours from a 17th-century building in Paris, France just a few minutes’ walk from the famed Jardin des Tuileries. I used to spend some of my lunch breaks at the Jardin…admiring the absolute gorgeousness of it all. I still miss those fresh baguettes with jambon cru, fresh sliced tomatoes with olive oil drizzled on top.
Another of my “offices” was on a ferry between mainland Thailand and the laid-back, palm-fringed holiday island of Koh Phangan. In fact, this is something I’ve done a number of times because I’ve chosen to base myself in Thailand part of the year. It’s amazing at sunset out on the deck, when jungle-topped limestone cliffs and islands jutting skyward from the turquoise sea are backlit by an otherworldly orange glow.
I’ve also worked from a pulsating bar in Panama City, Panama. Generally, I try to avoid writing copy in packed bars or nightclubs. Too many “distractions” if you know what I mean. But I was with my mentor at the time, and we made it work.
I’ve written copy in many, many places. More than I can count. Right now, I’m staying in a traditional Khmer mansion at a chilled out resort town called Sihanoukville on the coast in Cambodia.
I’m always amazed that more people don’t try to get involved in copywriting. You don’t need experience, the money can be fantastic and it’s easy to get started. If you’ve ever wanted to travel the world and make great money doing it, I couldn’t think of a better profession.
