Video: Fishing on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a worldwide reputation for sport fishing on its Pacific Coast.

But in the highlands about three hours from the capital, San Jose, you’ll find Captain Ron Saunders on the waters of Lake Arenal. This former custom cabinet maker from Las Vegas and lifelong fisherman has spent the last seven years here as a fishing guide for locals, tourists, and expats. He works out of his home, bringing his 18 foot Boston Whaler to the boat ramp nearest his clients.

The catch? The piranha-like machaca and the aggressive guapote, also known as the rainbow bass.

Most days Ron’s is one of the few boats out on the water. That tranquility—and the natural beauty of the landscape—is what attracted him to the area all those years ago.

As Ron explains in this video, novice fisherman are completely welcome, as are visitors who just want to get an on-the-water view of the area and the Arenal volcano at the south end.
