Video: A Look Through the Keyhole at Rental Living in Costa Rica

As we so often recommend at International Living, renting before deciding to buy or build your dream home can be a good way to familiarize yourself with the lay of the land in your new home.

I want to give you an inside look at renting in Costa Rica by giving you a tour of the home my husband Junior and I are currently renting (and loving.) Check out the video below to see an example of what your rental budget could afford you here.

Our rental is in Matapalo, Guanacaste, less than a 10-minute drive to Playa Grande. It takes 15 minutes to get to Tamarindo on the back road (dirt) or 20 minutes on the main road (paved).

We most enjoy being a little bit off the beaten path, surrounded by nature in a house that offers plenty of space for us to work and entertain guests. The natural lighting and outdoor space including our own pool are a couple of our favorite things about this home.

If you’re interested in comparing buying value in this area, here are some properties currently on the market.

A fully furnished, two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo in a gated community in Matapalo for $107,000. It’s a 10-minute drive to Playa Grande with a shared swimming pool and barbecue area. At just under 1,000 square feet, this condo features granite countertops, and all North American-style stainless steel appliances, as well as a washer and dryer.

With a little more space, another Matapalo home is currently listed at $179,000. Featuring a 1,500-square-foot, open floor plan with high-vaulted ceilings, and traditional tile throughout. It offers three-bedrooms and two-bathrooms, along with a complete wrap-around porch and a two-car garage.

Rentals come both unfurnished and furnished. And keep in mind that unfurnished can mean there is no refrigerator or washer/dryer. And furnished rentals often come with all the furniture, as well as bed linens, plates, cutlery, and more—totally turn-key. Be sure to find out the status of homes you are interested in so you don’t ship down or buy items you don’t need.
