South Africa
The country I live in offers digital nomad and retirement visas for qualifying applicants. To retire here, you'll need a minimum monthly income of about $2,000. The digital nomad visa hasn't been finalized yet, but it's expected to require around $3,500 in monthly income.
Why South Africa: The country's natural beauty is legendary. The Western Cape region around Cape Town is world-famous for its culture, cuisine, and natural environment. But what many people don't realize is that the overall cost of living here is between 60% and 75% less than in a typical US city.
Croatia
Remote workers who earn at least $3,000 a month are welcome to live in this beautiful Balkan country. In common with many European countries, this amount is based on 2.5 times the average monthly net salary in the country, so it will change annually.
Why Croatia: Croatia’s coastline on the Adriatic Sea enjoys crystal clear waters and over 1,000 islands, making the place a paradise for boaters. Dubrovnik’s Old Town is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cost of living is between 50% and 70% less than in the US. The country is safe and peaceful and offers quick access to neighboring countries, including Italy, Greece, Slovenia, and Austria.
Sri Lanka

This South Asian island nation offers digital nomads residency rights in exchange for a monthly income of $2,000. The digital nomad visa is reportedly one of the easiest and quickest to get.
Why Sri Lanka: Many Westerners are unfamiliar with the country, but it's much more than an offshoot of India. Its low population density means there are plenty of rural spaces to enjoy. It's a tropical island with palm-fringed beaches and azure seas. The island is packed with ancient Buddhist and Sinhalese temples. The impact of Portuguese and Dutch colonialism is very much in evidence, with many families retaining European surnames.
Iceland
On the opposite end of the climatic spectrum to Sri Lanka, the aptly named Iceland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Remote workers with an income of about $7,500 a month are welcome to live in the country.
Why Iceland: Iceland's cost of living is higher than most other potential destinations since many basic items are imported. But its natural beauty is spectacular, and Icelandic culture is remarkably rich. One author described the locals as “highly erudite, highly caffeinated fishermen,” reflecting the population's love of literature, coffee, and the sea.
Mauritius

This lovely Indian Ocean nation offers remote workers residency for a minimum monthly income of $1,500 or $3,000 for a couple. The country also offers residency for retirees for the same monthly income.
Why Mauritius: Mauritius is quite a large island, surrounded by coral reefs that create calm shallow lagoons perfect for swimming and diving. The mountainous interior boasts lush rainforests, waterfalls, and rapidly flowing rivers. The country is a melting pot of Indian, African, Chinese, and European influences, with a unique blend of French and South Asian cuisine.
Fiji
Retirees or those with passive income can get residency in this Pacific island paradise by depositing $45,000 in a local bank account, which you draw on for a monthly income of $3,750. To keep the residency, you must simply top up the amount at the end of every year.
Why Fiji: Fiji is a classic Pacific island paradise with white sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, palm trees, and the rest. Its underwater environment is spectacular, and it's known as the Soft Coral Capital Of The World. It's larger than many Pacific islands, so there's plenty of hiking and white water rafting in the interior. The culture is a blend of indigenous Fijian, Indian, and European influences.
The world is full of potential destinations, and if you're the adventurous type, there are plenty of places beyond the most popular destinations. If you'd like to explore your options, drop me a line at Global Citizen, and I can help you achieve your dream.
