Tenancy laws in Australia protect both the renter and the owner and are covered by each state’s Residential Tenancy Act. Rents cannot be increased in any state before the first year of tenancy ends. The Global Property Guide is a good source of information for renting regulations throughout the various Australian states.

A typical two-bedroom home ranges from AU$275 ($284) per week in Adelaide to AU$450 ($465) per week in Sydney and Canberra. Three-bedroom homes rent from AU$320 ($331) to AU$560 ($579) in the same cities.
