Have you ever felt like you were born to live by the ocean?

In high school, my senior quote was, “If you want to look me up, I'm under a coconut tree.”

These days, that's pretty accurate. Living in Villarreal, just minutes from Tamarindo, I have access to a stunning array of beaches—each with its own charm. I'm also just a few hours away from rivers, volcanoes, and glamping spots that bring a whole new meaning to the idea of natural luxury.

Here are my favorite places in Costa Rica—perfect for beach lovers, nature seekers, and anyone who craves a little bit of everything.

Let's start with my three favorite beaches:

Tamarindo Beach

This is my go-to beach—just two kilometers from home. Tamarindo is perfect for a quick ocean dip or sunset stroll with friends. While it can get busy near Witch's Rock, I love heading to the shaded area near the point by Capitán Suizo. Whether I'm swimming or simply soaking in the view, it always resets my soul.

Puerto Viejo (Guanacaste)

Not to be confused with the Caribbean town of the same name, this quiet bay in Guanacaste features calm, crystal-clear waters. It's an ideal spot for floating and fully unplugging.

Langosta Estuary

Sunday afternoons often find me here with friends. At low tide, we lounge in the gentle current. Just be mindful—as the tide rises, so does the strength of the current.

As much as I love the beach, I appreciate that there are also so many incredible places I can travel to experience a change in environment… all within five hours of my house.

I recommend adding these nature adventures to your next trip to Costa Rica:

Rio Lajas

Located in Cabuya on the Nicoya Peninsula, Rio Lajas is a hidden paradise. Whether you want to sit in rushing rapids or relax in calm pools, it's a nature lover's dream. Afterward, head to Cabuya Bakery and Cafe for cheesecake. Stay at Aves Hotel in Montezuma—morning coffee with monkeys swinging by? Yes, please.

La Leona Waterfall

Adventure seekers, take note. Near Rincón de la Vieja, La Leona offers turquoise waters, river crossings, and cave swims. Go with a guide—the trail is on private land and conditions can vary. During the rainy season, the current gets tricky.

La Senda

Just 15 minutes from home, La Senda is a sanctuary. Known for its sacred geometry labyrinth and energy vortexes, it's a hub for retreats and festivals. After a sound healing or breathwork session, I always savor the farm-to-table meals that are nothing short of gourmet.

Volcano Arenal

Hot springs, sloths, and stunning volcanic views.

Every visit here feels magical. Arenal stands tall and serene, surrounded by wildlife and tropical wonder. Whether you're relaxing in hot springs or exploring sloth trails and hanging bridges, Arenal offers a different kind of paradise. Visit early in the day to catch the animals before the midday heat.

Tierra Nueva Glamping

In Grecia's hills, this glamping site offers domed accommodations with hammocks and views of the Central Valley. Nearby hiking trails and waterfalls offer easy access to nature, and the on-site restaurant? Fresh, delicious, and affordable.

La Carolina Lodge

When I crave mountain air and jungle vibes, I head to Bijagua de Upala. At La Carolina Lodge, I sip unlimited coffee or hot chocolate made with fresh milk, relax in fire-heated hot tubs, and soak in the rustic charm. Tenorio National Park is nearby, home to a must-see turquoise waterfall.

Costa Rica, to me, is about living in rhythm with nature. Whether you're dipping into warm Pacific waters or hiking to a hidden waterfall, it's all here. Outdoor living, sunny skies, and time with friends make every day feel like a vacation.
